Witchboard: Not an Underappreciated 80’s gem

Happiness is Mandatory

So I have watched several underappreciated 80’s movies and written about them. Mannequin, Desperately Seeking Susan etc. Recently I watched Witchboard and I want to make clear, it is not amongst them.

The two main male leads compete to see who can deliver their lines more woodenly and reach depths so low, they manage to make Tawny F’n Kitaen’s seem like Meryl Streep by comparison.

Also they have a shower scene with Tawny and manage not to show anything. I’m not saying this should have been a softcore porn movie, but if you’re going to go there, f’n go there.

The sole brightspot, and the reason I watched this movie is the psychic Zarebeth, played by Kathleen Wilhoite, who later became the voice of Pepper Ann (and a whole bunch of other stuff.) She plays a Punk Rock psychic called in to do an exorcism.

So I am now 50, which sucks, but beats the alternative. So I remembered that I had remembered a catch phrase from Witchboard, but not which one. So I found it free on Amazon (with ads) and watched to remember what had made an impression on me as a teenager. When Zarebeth leaves she says “TTFN” which another character explains means “Ta Ta for Now” and that became my sign off on letters and emails for years (I mean decades) And that is what I forgot I remembered, but by that time I was 45 minutes in and decided to see if there was anything else to take from it. Sadly there isn’t. This movie is horrible.
