Florida governor Ron DeSantis has banned mask mandates in his state. Read that again. He didn’t mandate masks, he didn’t ban venues from opening without mask mandates, no for DeSantis the problem isn’t the virus, it’s combating the virus.
Governor Abbott has similarly banned mask mandates in Texas making it impossible for local officials to combat the spread of the virus while he takes no action on the state level. The daily average of cases in Texas was over 8,000 according to the New York Times.
Clearly DeSantis and Abbot are not interested in saving the lives of their constituents. But assuming they are not sociopaths interested in death for death’s sake they have a reason for their behaviour. It’s hardly an obviously winning strategy to let your own political supporters shuffle off this mortal coil as Shakespeare put it.
It has gotten so bad that Robert Reich posted on twitter why Gov Abbot in Texas and DeSantis are so focused on the war on masks when they’re leading the nation in new cases?
