What was the Endgame of the Jan 6th Insurrection?

1:09 pm is when the Capitol police first asked for National Guard backup. 5:20 pm is when National Guard troops from Virginia actually arrive, after being delayed for hours by the Pentagon. The insurrectionists were able to swarm the capitol building and might have killed members of congress and the vice-president if not for the heroics of some of the officers of the Capitol Police.

But what was the endgame? How did even the murder of members of congress or even Mike Pence help the political chances of Donald J. Trump? Well first consider some of the maneuvers in the background that led up to the insurrection. I mentioned the 4 hours of delay on the part of the Department of Defense that prevented the National Guard troops from being deployed that could have prevented the loss of life.

This delay was the product of Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, who replaced Esper after Esper resigned Nov 9 2020. Why was Esper out of favor with Trump? As I’ve noted in previous articles Esper seemed to apologize for his role in deploying troops against protesters during the BLM protests. After those remarks, milquetoast and weasel worded as they were, Trump wanted to fire him and was talked out of it by his top level advisors.
