Member-only story
There’s a guy living at my gym. So maybe this is better as an #AITA thread on Reddit but I don’t have a Reddit account and I really don’t want another social media login to keep track of…
So last week I found a guy sleeping at my gym, I won’t say which one. Now pre Covid I wouldn’t have sweated it, no pun intended, but mid-Covid (it’s not over people no matter how many politicians say it is) I think people should work out and get out, not linger spreading their possibly infectious breath all over the locker room.
But I didn’t say anything to the employees or this person because I figure anyone might need a post workout nap or be feeling too drunk to drive or somesuch. But I went back over the weekend and the same person was sleeping in the same spot and there was a smell suggesting person or clothes hadn’t been washed in some time.
Now I sympathize with the homeless. I have volunteered on behalf of the homeless. And while I might be fairly accused of NIMBYism here, I think it’s more Covid concerns than about a homeless person living at the gym. But again, as in a good #AITA thread, I might be the asshole here.
But this time I asked the guy working the front desk if they had a policy against people sleeping in the locker room and the guy wasn’t sure. But he said other people had noticed and complained and he was looking into it.
I also had the simultaneous and contradictory impulses to close the door very lightly since someone was sleeping and to slam it to discourage the same sleeping. I tried to close it just the normal amount but I may have erred on the side of slamming. Again #IMBTA.
And of course, the most interesting part of a moral grey area story, what would you do?
