I’m a bit late to the party (but what’s six months between friends) as I just reupped my sub to Netflix and watched Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. I’ve read the comic and watched the movie several times. I’m a firm Knives and Scott shipper and felt they make the better couple than Scott and Ramona. That was until I watched the anime show on Netflix.

If you’ve never read or heard of Scott Pilgrim vs The World, it’s a movie based on a comic that came out in 2010. It came out with a cast of superstars before they were superstars. It has a future Captain Marvel in Brie Larsen, a future Captain America in Chris Evans, a future Roman Roy (see Succession) in Kieran Culkin, etc. And all these amazing stars come back to be the voice actors in SPTO.

I wasn’t in a hurry to see it because I was quite familiar with the source material and thought it would just be new visuals. And I was sooo wrong. Scott Pilgrim loses his first fight with an Evil Ex and by the second episode there is a musical break when his ex Envy Adams (played by Brie Larsen) sings “I will Remember You.” I think that’s the point when I stopped expecting his death and loss of the fight to be immediately retconned as a dream or an imagining by one of the characters.

When I realized and embraced we were in a whole new plotline the series became a lot more fun. Matt Patel…
