So I’ve been writing for Medium for years now, fairly unsuccessfully if you measure success by either readership or profitability. Which I believe are fair measures of success for performance on a platform. There is also something to be said for the quality of content but that is subjective and I choose not to weigh it on it further here.
Still I can’t deny that my article on “Subservience” the Megan Fox headed rip off of Megan the killer robot babysitter movie has achieved a distinction. It is the number one search result when you input “Subservience bad review” after the AI summary comes up. It’s only slightly further down if you search “Subservience Negative Movie Review”
I only noticed this when the story started getting hundred of reads, months after the movie was available for purchase on Amazon (how I saw it as I am avoiding movies until the risk of Covid is reduced) Apparently when it dropped on Netflix there was a search for negative reviews (because it’s soooo bad) and my review was there to fill the need. So reasoning that people were finding my story someway or somehow I tried to duplicate the google search and lo and behold I was the best at something ;)
And of course, by Medium math, hundreds of readers results in dozens of cents (12 cents to be exact) in revenue. Whereas some of my stories with tens of readers makes whole dollars in revenue. Whatever the path is that people take to make thousands of dollars a month on Medium I am nowhere near it and couldn’t find it on a bet.
But I have this minor victory and I will crow about it till the cows come home on this New Year’s Eve.
Hope everyone has a great year of writing ahead of them in 2025!
