Leaving Afghanistan is always the hardest part. England in 1842 lost an entire army (4500 troops and 12,000 civilians) down to one sole survivor in their retreat from Kabul.

The English had negotiated a treaty for their peaceful withdrawal. “And despite the treaty, the British column came under attack when it reached a mountain pass, the Khurd Kabul. The retreat became a massacre.”
