I’m late to the party I admit it. But just watched episode 1 of Masters of the Universe: Revelation on Netflix and I’m impressed.

So the first episode started unevenly. Some nice tags by Kevin Smith ‘those who have seen Battle…Cat’ to Cringer. Telling Teela she looked like a ‘warrior goddess.’ And the amazing voice cast Mark Hamil as Skeletor, Buffy the slayer herself as Teela, Lena Heady as Evil-Lyn, the mind boggles at how Kevin Smith convinced these famous and talented people to give voice to toys…

The animation is leaps and bounds above the original series and the scale of the battle is something to behold. But it was still pretty much He-Man is all powerful, physics is disregarded, bad guys go down to one punch or just the ground being shaken…etc. Right up until Skeletor sets Moss Man on fire, burns him to ashes (I assume killing him but you never know) and says breezily “Smells like Pine.” Love it!

Then He-Man stabs Skeletor through the chest…but that was the plan! Castle Greyskull is an illusion (oh noes!) But wait the world is going to end! He-Man has a solution (surprisingly involving him raising his sword and saying the magic words, who knew the solution to every episode would be the solution here?) But as he’s doing the thing, saying the words Skeletor makes a grab for what he thinks is ultimate power and they both die (or seem to.)

The King gets mad and exiles Man at Arms and tells Duncan’s daughter to toss him out. How did he think that would go well? Teela tells them all to go to hell because they’ve been lying to her the entire time. (Love it!)

And that was the first episode. Killing the face of the toyline in the first episode? Respect.
