Meal Fit for a King: A Sad Succession Origin Theory

In the Succession Finale, one of the great scenes if the Roy siblings anointing Kendall as the new CEO with a game of Meal Fit for a King. They ransack the kitchen for hot sauce and bread ends and put it all in a blender. It makes a concoction so horrible that it’s a wonder Jeremy Strong actually drank it and no wonder at all that he threw it up afterwards.

The familiarity and ritual of this scene clearly implies that this is a game the trio have played before as children. And I think a line of dialogue in the dinner scene gives the reason why. Lady Caroline says “Hearty fare but modest rations” and Siobhan says “Surprise, Surprise.”

So this hints that their mother rarely fed them enough to not be hungry and almost never kept enough food in the house. So the children, hungry after dinner would have to canvass a mostly empty kitchen for what snacks they could find.

Say all the terrible things about Logan that you will, and there are so many terrible things about him, unstocked cupboards were not a flaw you could attribute to his house. So I think it would be quite the surprise to the Roy children to find themselves hungry with nothing to eat. And being kids they would make a game out of it. Hence, Meal Fit for a King, a childhood ritual born out of a mother’s cheapness.

One more indicator that the Roy siblings had a childhood that left them scarred and in some cases broken and despite their wealth and influence, has them flailing for meaning in their adult lives.
