I didn’t you know. Meet Jesus in a Volkswagen repair shop. But once upon a time I drove up from Long Beach to see a girl who lived in Sacramento. And we stopped in a Barnes and Noble, there not being much to do in Sactown and there was a folk singer. I don’t remember his name and I can’t find this song on the internet anywhere (if you know where it is please post a link in the comments)
Anyway he sang what I consider to be the very best song about Jesus in the world and I want to preserve it, the lyrics at least. As best I can remember it the first verse went like this…
I met Jesus in a Volkswagen Repair Shop
waiting for a brand new tire
I asked Jesus if he could ‘get me some pot’
he said “I know a way to take you higher’
And then the next verse started
He looked might funny in a Volkswagen repair shop…
And another verse went
Jesus beat me up in a Volkswagen repair shop
He didn’t turn the other cheek
And sadly that’s all I can remember. The girl sent me a ‘Dear John’ letter while I was in basic training in Fort Benning and to the best of my memory we never spoke again. I wish her well and wonder if she remembers that night and that song…
