I just wrote an article ‘How Did It Get Like This?’ In that article I look into why politics feel more fraught in the last 20 years then they did in say the 1960’s through the 90’s.

But looking at how we got here begs the question how can this be changed. Because if not, if politics is only about power with one side having no respect for the law, science or common good and the other wanting to be their good friends and colleagues, we’re pretty much doomed.

One way to fix the problem is a modern constitution. I like the constitution as a document but it is unfortunately, the product of the 18th century and there’s a reason you don’t arm the military with muskets anymore and you don’t drive a horse and buggy (with all due respect to the Amish.)

There are more successful democracies than ours, by which I mean are considered freer, more responsive to the will of the people, there is a higher standard of living etc. These all have constitutions that were written after the United States which is the oldest except for San Marino’s and they don’t allot nearly three months for the transition of power because that’s how long it took to get to Washington D.C. by horse.

So firstly we need to modernize our constitution in ways that comport with these more successful democracies. We also need to look at problems that every nation is…
