GOP never wanted King Trump

It’s safe to say Trump wasn’t happy about the election results even though he outperformed what the polls predicted going into the election. And Senator Hawley and many Republican representatives plan to object when the electoral college votes are counted. Mitch McConnell, the Majority Senate leader and Ghoul in Chief of the GOP asked his colleagues not to do this. He didn’t want the Senate Republicans to have to go on record either for democracy or against Trump. Because Trump commands the loyalty of a vast swath of the GOP base, the deluded evangelicals, the Qanon followers, the unabashed white supremacists and the actual neo-nazis.

But it is clear that he never really had the loyalty of Mitch McConnell and the Donor class. He was the archetypical ‘Useful Idiot’ who has outlived his usefulness if not his idiocy. When Trump defied international law and locked kids in cages for seeking asylum from political persecution, the Senate Majority leader was happy to rubber stamp his policies. When he increased the deficit to give tax cuts to the rich, the deficit hawks in the GOP had no harsh words to say. But when he demanded 2k in payment to the people, a policy that served no GOP or donor goals but would only increase his personal popularity with the American people, Mitch gave a stern nolle prosequi and that was that.
