Asylum IS a Life or Death Issue

Like many I’m outraged about the comments of a White House Staffer quoted in a Peter Nicholas Tweet

While my readers know that I’m very concerned about voting rights and will rant about them for ten minutes at the drop of a hat, this one’s about the immigration side of that quote.

Of course immigration folks will say their issue is a life or death issue…because it is. Every Asylum claim is based on a reasonable fear of persecution and death if they return to their country. A CNN article from 2014 described Immigration hearings as “Death penalty cases in a traffic court setting” because Immigration court is a civil court and there is no right to appointed counsel as there is in criminal court. Denied asylum claims are often a death sentence. As I expressed in a tweet today on this point…
