80’s Hidden Gems: Who’s That Girl

My article about Mannequin was positively received and a reader on twitter said he hoped I would write about more 80’s hidden gems. So, since I don’t get a lot of positive feedback, and even if I did it still wouldn’t satisfy my giant ego and rampant insecurities, I have decided to do just that. I’ll start with some of my fave critically neglected movies of the 80’s, and perhaps move on to other decades.

Anyway enough preamble. “Who’s That Girl” has a 38 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a slightly higher audience rating of 47 percent. And yet it’s another one of my favourite movies. A very loose remake of ‘Bringing up Baby’ I would say it might perhaps qualify as a reimagining at most. I actually watched ‘Bringing up Baby’ because of this movie, and that movie has it’s moments, but not something I would wholeheartedly recommend.

So, requisite spoiler alert for a movie from four decades agone…

Still with me? Great. So this movie is no Mannequin, but then what is? It is absolutely a Madonna vehicle, I think her debut movie was “Desperately Seeking Susan” which she had a much smaller role, despite being the eponymous Susan. Here there are few scenes she’s not present in. And she carries the movie, in an affected…
