Over one million people saw the movie 2000 Mules in the first two weeks after it was released. The movie claimed to explain how the 2020 election was stolen. The executive producer Salem Media Group has issued an apology, and pulled distribution of the movie (and the book it was based on) and paid a significant settlement after being sued by Mark Andrews, a person named in the movie.
Despite being fact checked at the time it was described as the most successful political documentary in a decade, the previous being also from Dinesh D’souza ‘Obama’s America.’ The film and the book is largely based on ‘research’ done by True the Vote. But after repeated demands for facts to back up it’s claims True the Vote finally admitted in a court filing in early 2024 it had no evidence or even leads to evidence.
It is worth noting that in 2018 Trump pardoned Dinesh D’souza for his conviction for campaign finance violations, for which he was on five years probation. It is of course beyond any reasonable expectation that this retraction and apology by Salem Media will convince the MAGA cult who swallowed every lie in the film verbatim and they will recant their accusations. Still I feel the need to spread this information because hope springs eternal that people and even MAGA’s can be convinced by facts.
